“Poetry is the perfect place for the hidden to dip into view, to be witnessed without being contained. This is not magic tricks, just magic: things unfixed and hard to fathom and viscerally there. The mystery.”Rebecca Tamás
The Poetry Society is a Durham SU student group whose details are: Durham Students’ Union (also known as Durham SU or DSU), a charity registered in England and Wales (1145400) and a company limited by guarantee (07689815), and its principal address is Dunelm House, New Elvet, DURHAM, County Durham, DH1 3AN.
The Gentian (pronounced jen-shun) is a journal that publishes exciting new poetry and photography from emerging and established poets. We believe, as Caroline Bird says, that “Failure isn’t the risk, but the point: each poem falls short so we write another.” We want work that throws itself out into the blue, that is ambitious, that does away with the every-day and old fashioned (or at least shows us it in a new light). We believe in poetry that is lyrical, strange and alive.
The journal is run and operated by Durham University Poetry Society. Each of our editors stays on as a reader to help the next and pass on their expertise. The Gentian is a project born out of a desire to share what we know, mentor new poets/editors and showcase new work. We believe our sense of community as well as our commitment to great poetry is what makes The Gentian special. Please note that you do not need an affiliation with the university to submit to us, all are welcome.
The Gentian can be found on Facebook, Twitter, or through our email (email@example.com). Please address all queries with the subject line QUERY. Note that a submission is not a query.
